The band was formed in Cincinnati in 1999 and it currently consists of Matt Berninger (lead vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, bass, piano, keyboards, harmonica, mandola, and backing vocals), Bryce Dessner (guitar, keyboards, piano, and backing vocals), Scott Devendorf (bass, guitar, backing vocals), and Bryan Devendorf (drums, percussion, and backing vocals). While their musical style can be broadly classified as indie rock (a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1980s, encapsulating the genres chamber pop, indie pop, lo fi, math rock, neo psychedelia, post punk revival, sadcore, and shoegazing), it also includes elements of alternative country (a subgenre of country music that incorporates influences ranging from roots rock, bluegrass, rockabilly, honky-tonk, alternative rock, folk rock, and punk rock), and chamber pop (a subgenre of indie rock that developed in the mid 1990s as a reaction against the fuzz distortion and lo fi aesthetic prominent in alternative music). They’ve had a stellar career with 6 studio albums and they’ve performed at many major music events including Reading and Leeds Festivals, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza. Their latest album (Sleep Well Beast) comes out in September 2017.
