Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock was born in Chicago in 1940 and is a pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, composer, and actor. Over the years, his musical style has spanned many genres such as jazz, post bop (a modern jazz style that continues the distinguishing characteristics that separate jazz from the world of pop and rock), jazz fusion (a genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined aspects of jazz harmony and improvisation with styles such as funk, rock, rhythm and blues, and Latin jazz), electro (a genre of electronic music and early hip hop directly influenced by the use of the Roland TR-808 drum machines, and funk), and classical. He’s had a stellar career with forty one studio albums, twelve live albums, sixty two compilation albums, thirty eight singles, and 5 soundtrack albums. He’s collaborated with Donald Byrd, Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, Bonnie Raitt, John Mayer, John Legend, P!nk, Dave Matthews, James Morrison, and many other renowned artists. He’s received many accolades including an Academy Award, 14 Grammy Awards, 5 MTV Awards, a Gold Note Jazz Award, 2 BMI Film Music Award, a Soul Train Music Award, and a NEA Jazz Masters Award.
