Donald Jay Fagen was born in Passaic (New Jersey) in 1948 and is a singer-songwriter, best known as one of the founders (the other being Walter Becker) of jazz rock band Steely Dan. They met when Donald was passing by a café in New York and heard Walter playing electric guitar. Donald said in an interview, “I hear this guy practicing, and it sounded very professional and contemporary. It sounded like, you know, like a black person, really.” He introduced himself and they bonded over they had similar tastes in music. They started to write songs together and created a musical style with complex jazz-based structures and harmonies. They’re renowned for their near-obsessive perfectionism in the recording studio and they’ve had a stellar career with over 40 million albums sold worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Steely Dan split up in 1981 and Donald released his debut solo album (The Nightly) a year later. It hit #11 on the US Billboard 200 chart, sold over a million copies in the US alone, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Since then, he’s released 3 more albums, 1 box set, and collaborated with many renowned artists.
